About Jiu Jitsu

‘Brazilian jiu-jitsu,’ ‘BJJ,’ or simply ‘jiu jitsu,’ is a grappling martial art and sport that emphasizes using leverage to control and dominate an opponent. An incredible form of self-defense, and practiced around the world, Jiu jitsu is an amazing way to protect one’s self, de-escalate conflict, and if need be, neutralize physical confrontations effectively and efficiently. Jiu jitsu can be practiced by anyone, and is even taught to law enforcement in certain parts of the world because of the confidence and skill that comes with proper training.

Our art was founded in Brazil in the 1920s by the Gracie family. After learning Judo from travelling businessman Mitsuyo Maeda, a direct student of the founder of Judo (Kanō Jigorō), brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., and Hélio Gracie developed the foundations of what is now known as Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The term ‘jiu jitsu’ can be found throughout martial arts history in Japan and Brazil, and at times may be spelled slightly different, but in the modern era, most ‘jiu jitsu’ practiced is ‘Brazilian jiu-jitsu.’

About Our Academy

Opening the Wavebreaker Jiu Jitsu Academy has been in the works for many years. The family atmosphere we hope to foster is represented by our own family staff team. The term ‘Wavebreaker’ comes from the tetrapods used on shorelines to protect people by literally ‘breaking waves’ that could potentially harm nearby communities. Our goal with our academy is to share the art we love, but also to provide a space in our community where families can come to break their own ‘waves.’ Jiu jitsu training can be very therapeutic in its own way and we hope that our mats can be a safe place for our members. ‘Wavebreaker’ also refers to our philosophy towards jiu jitsu and life. Sometimes on the mats and in life, things don’t always go your way. With perseverance and the right tools to manage, you learn to weather the storm, guide the waves, and prevail.

About Our Team

The Body of Four Team is led by Professor Marco Costa. An accomplished martial artist, competitor and former professional mixed martial arts fighter, Professor Marco was part of the first generation of black belts in Canada. He has developed numerous champions and black belts, served as the first ever Head Coach of the Canadian National Team, and is an IBJJF recognized 4th degree black belt.

The team is known for its durable and high level athletes, strong teaching methodologies, and emphasis on foundations and strong defense. A number of Body of Four black belts are high ranking referees and officials, and in the competition circuit, our team is synonymous with good sportsmanship and integrity.

Today, the team has a total of 21 academies in Canada, and 4 in Colombia. Each year, the Canadian affiliates gather at the end of the year for a team gathering and grading, and Professor Marco (and members of the team who can join) travel once a year to Colombia for a team camp and jiu jitsu immersion experience.

The new Wavebreaker Jiu Jitsu Academy will proudly serve as the Courtice affiliate of the Body of Four Team.
